Indelible Grace Hymnbook

I Am Jesus' Little Lamb

Text:
Henrietta L. van Hayn
Music:
Christopher Miner

1. I am Jesus’ little lamb,
Ever glad at heart I am;
For my Shepherd gently guides me,
Knows my need, and well provides me,
Loves me eve’ry day the same,
Even calls me by my name

2. Day by day, at home, away,
Jesus is my staff and stay.
When I hunger, Jesus feeds me,
Into pleasant pastures leads me;
When I thirst, He bids me go
Where the quiet waters flow.

3. Who so happy as I am,
Even now the Shepherd’s lamb?
And when my short life is ended,
By His angel host attended,
He shall fold me to His breast,
There within his arms to rest.

Reflection

Chris Miner set this text to a new tune many years ago, and I have long enjoyed it. We have considered putting it on an Indelible Grace record many times, but it just never seemed like the right fit. My wife Wendy has been a big advocate of this tune and when Rain For Roots were formed, everything finally came together. Rain For Roots includes longtime Indelible Grace artists Sandra McCracken and Katy Bowser, along with Ellie Holcomb (who sang BGVs on the acoustic version of "Arise My Soul") and Flo Paris. Rain For Roots shares with Indelible Grace an understanding of the formative power of the songs we sing and teach our children. The text is a child-like faith expression and appropriation of Psalm 23, and it was my wife’s idea to have Rain For Roots sing it. I particularly love the blend of the harmony vocals on this track. Part of my hope in including it is that those who hear this track will listen to the other Rain For Roots albums as well.
